Incorporating Sustainability in Higher Chemistry Education in Indonesia through Green Chemistry: Inspirations by Inquiring the Practice in a German University

Abstract: Green chemistry is suggested as an important guide to allow the practice of chemistry to become more sustainable. In this study, a chemistry department at a German university is analyzed by an outside view to how it integrates the philosophy of green chemistry into its research and teaching practices to inform higher education institutions in Indonesia on how this issue could be approached. The study reveals that the level of understanding of green chemistry is largely varying among different stakeholders, how… Show more

“…Thus, chemistry tainability in education. In Indonesia, presumably Green Chemistry principles and SSC with their relation to sustainability in chemistry education are still not widely known to university and senior high school students (Hamidah et al, 2017;Listyarini, 2019). Green chemistry and SSC have the same purpose of minimizing the destructive effect of chemistry in the environment and human health (Duarte et al, 2017;Rojanarata et al, 2011).…”

“…At the national level, a collaboration between Beyond Benign and the ACS Green Chemistry Institute has led to the Green & Sustainable Chemistry Education Module Development Project, which is currently developing green and sustainable chemistry education resources for general and organic chemistry . Finally, at the global level, organizations such as the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) promote the integration of green chemistry into education, with many countries such as Brazil, , Canada, China, Indonesia, Israel, Malaysia, Russia, Spain, and Thailand joining the effort. Adding to these broad-based endeavors to integrate green chemistry, we have developed a method of incorporating green chemistry during remote instruction using student-generated infographics.…”
