Increase of Lactoferrin Concentration in Mastitic Goat Milk

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Lactoferrin concentration (LFC) in normal and mastitic milk of dairy goats were examined. LFC in bulk milk collected from 70 dairy goat farms and individual milk samples from 10 goats with mastitis were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and their reaction time in methylene blue reduction test (MBRT) monitored. Bulk milk samples were categorized into three grades, such as high, normal and low, based on the reaction time in MBRT. The mean LFC in milk that was considered high quality… Show more

“…Therefore, we examined the physiological functions of both the 23 kDa and 22 kDa N-lobe fragments. Since outbreaks of mastitis have been reported in humans [31], sheep [19], and goats [8], both N-lobe fragments were searched for amino acid sequences in common with human Lf, sheep Lf, and goat Lf using a database system (GenomeNet; Kyoto University, Bioinfomatics Center, Kyoto, Japan). Subsequently, four peptides were synthesized from the bLf peptides of both the 23 kDa and 22 kDa bLf molecules (Fig.…”

“…Respect to natural inhibitors (lactoferrin, lysozyme and lactoperoxidase activity) the information in goat milk is limited, although the results presented in Table 4 are in concordance with the few studies for lactoferrin (Chen et al, 2003;Drackova et al, 2009) and lactoperoxidase activity (Zapico et al, 1991). However, the lysozyme quantity (0.25 mg/l) indicated by Chandal et al (1968) in goat milk is difficult to relate with the value of the lysozyme activity obtained herein (227 U/ml), since the method used and the expression in units are different.…”

“…The lactoferrin concentration in goat milk varies between 20-200 µg/ml (Chen et al, 2003;Dračková et al, 2009). Additionally, its concentration level is usually higher during the colostrum period and at the end of lactation, when it reaches values of 387 µg/ml .…”

“…Esses resultados estão de acordo com os obtidos em estudos anteriores que também descreveram um aumento dos teores de lactoferrina em amostras com isolamento bacteriano, assim como em amostras de leite com mamite (CHEN; CHEN; MAO, 2004;KAWAI et al, 2007;CHANETON et al, 2008;HYVÖNEN et al, 2009;BARTH et al, 2010;FORSBACK et al, 2010).…”
