Increase of protein extraction yield from rapeseed meal through a pretreatment with phytase

Abstract: Phytase pretreatment enhanced alkaline extraction yield of proteins from rapeseed meal. This procedure allowed also the production of rapeseed protein concentrates with very low levels of phytic acid, ∼1 g kg , improving their nutritional properties and commercial value. Moreover, after the pretreatment, the amount of phytic acid in the remaining rapeseed meal decreases about 25%. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

“…Alkaline extraction is the most commonly used method to extract proteins from oilseed meals (Rodrigues et al ., ). Isolated protein from RSM (PRSM) could not only increase the percentage of protein, but also reduce mineral elements from RSM.…”

“…Phytate is the major storage form of phosphorus in most cereal grains and oilseeds, and it usually accounts for 60–90% of the total available phosphorus. Beside its ability to chelate and precipitate minerals, phytate is also closely associated with proteins, especially in oilseeds, decreasing the bioavailability of critical nutrients such as protein, calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron (Haese et al ., ; Rodrigues et al ., ). Therefore, we predicted that the content of soluble phosphorus in the hydrolysate could reflect the hydrolysis ability of Bacillus for RSM to a great extent.…”

“…The double mutants produced in this study could be crossed with elite cultivars to breed low phytic acid varieties. One of the major aims of oilseed rape breeding is to improve the meal quality, which is rich in favorable proteins and amino acid profiles for human and mono‐gastric animal nutrition (Campbell et al , ; Rodrigues et al , ). Hitherto, external phytases are added to the meal to decrease phytic acid contents and to increase the bioavailability of minerals (Al‐Asheh & Duvnjak, ; Campbell et al , ).…”
