Increased Biomass of Nursery-Grown Douglas-Fir Seedlings upon Inoculation with Diazotrophic Endophytic Consortia

Abstract: Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) seedlings are periodically challenged by biotic and abiotic stresses. The ability of endophytes to colonize the interior of plants could confer benefits to host plants that may play an important role in plant adaptation to environmental changes. In this greenhouse study, nursery-grown Douglas-fir seedlings were inoculated with diazotrophic endophytes previously isolated from poplar and willow trees and grown for fifteen months in nutrient-poor conditions. Inoculated seedling… Show more

“…Several poplar and willow endophytes are diazotrophs with the ability of producing phytohormones and siderophores, and solubilizing inorganic phosphates (Khan et al, 2015; Doty et al, 2016). A recent study showed that inoculated Salicaceae endophytes in hybrid poplar plants can contribute about 65% of the total N in the leaves and increase plant biomass through BNF (Knoth et al, 2014).…”

“…These endophytes either as single strain or multi-strain inoculum have previously exhibited mutualistic behavior when added to other plant species including grasses, corn, rice, Douglas-fir and a variety of crop plants (Xin et al, 2009;Knoth et al, 2013;Knoth et al, 2014;Khan et al, 2012;Khan et al, 2015;DaSilveria et al, 2016). Combined application of endophytes can result in larger effects than those possible with individual inoculations (Knoth et al, 2013;Knoth et al, 2014;Rogers et al, 2012).…”

“…Poplar (Populus) and willow (Salix) trees of the Salicaceae have a wide global distribution, both in native riparian forests across the Northern Hemisphere and in planted forests, accounting for more than 95 million hectares globally (fao.org). Native poplar trees have a diverse microbiota, many with the ability to fix dinitrogen gas, solubilize phosphate, and promote plant growth and health especially under abiotic stresses such as drought and nutrient limitation (Doty et al, 2005Xin et al, 2009;Khan et al, 2012Khan et al, , 2015Khan et al, , 2016Kandel et al, 2015Kandel et al, , 2017Doty, 2016;Aghai et al, 2019). Beneficial microbiota have been isolated from hybrid poplar trees grown in contaminated sites, in field sites, or in tissue culture (Moore et al, 2006;Ulrich et al, 2008;Barac et al, 2009;Scherling et al, 2009;Taghavi et al, 2009).…”
