“…Studies by Rautelin HI et al and Li SL et al found that MMP-9 level increased significantly in the gastric mucosa of gastritis patients with positive H. pylori compared to the negative [ 22 , 23 ]. In a study conducted by Oliviera, it was found that H. pylori through a T4SS (Type IV Secretion System) pathway increases the activity of MMP-9 as a response to the invasion of H. pylori on the gastric epithelium [ 24 ].…”

“…Other studies have reported that the ulceration process induced by acetic acid involves an elevation in the gelatinases, which return to normal levels during the healing process [27]. Li et al [28] demonstrated that an increase in MMP-9 in gastric tissue is often associated with the development and progression of gastric ulcers. In the present study, we observed a reduction in MMP-9 in the chrysin-treated group, compared with that in the vehicle-treated group (Figure 6), which is consistent with that demonstrated in myocardial infarction [29].…”

“…Degradation and remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is a process of major importance during gastric ulcer formation, in which matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are essential. Among the different subtypes of MMPs, MMP-9 is known to play an important role in gastric damage [101]. MMP-9 expression is associated with the production and release of inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and most importantly TNF-α [102,103].…”

“…MMP-9 expression is associated with the production and release of inflammatory mediators, such as interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and most importantly TNF-α [102,103]. Oxidative stress and ROS in gastric glands enhance the expression of MMP-9, intensifying the gastric mucosal injury [101,103]. Thymol protects against ethanol-induced gastric ulcer by downregulating the expression of MMP-9 [69,70].…”
