“…Results of investigation on T cell subsets arc in discordance so far [20], In patients with AIDS with or without associated KS. an inverted T4/T8 ratio with a decreased absolute number of lymphocytes bearing T4 have repeatedly been described [22], On the other hand, in a study of Italian patients with primary KS the T4/T8 ratio was significantly increased due to a decrease in sup pressor cells [20] and normal values of T4 and T8 were found in 27 African patients with the endemic form of the disease [23], Our patients showed a normal absolute and relative pattern of peripheral blood T lymphocyte subsets. which was not different from that in controls.…”

“…HLA-DR5 has been associated with Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in HIV-l-positive Italians and Ashkenazi Jews [13][14][15][16][17][18] as well as with thrombocytopenia in the French [19] and lymphadenopathy syndrome in New Yorkers [20]. An increased frequency of HLA-DR5 was reported in classical, non-HIV-related KS patients as well [21], Mann et al [22] evaluated HLA-DQ antigen frequencies in KS patients and found HLA-DQ 1 to be consistently higher than controls in both the classical non-HIV population and the HIV-positive KS population.…”

“…In the current literature, some authors associate HLA-DR5 with AIDS/Kaposis's sarcoma in Italians and Ashkenazi Jews [1-3, 5, 7, 11]. Other authors link DR5 with throm bocytopenias in the French population [10] and with LAS in the New York population which is predomi nantly of eastern European and Mediterranean origin [12]. HLA-DR5 has increased frequency in classical Ka posi's sarcoma as well [9].…”

“…When Pollack et al [5] compared Italians or Ash kenazi Jews with AIDS/Kaposi's sarcoma to those of northern European background, the DR5 antigen was increased in the former but not in the latter. Enlow et al [ 12] supported the view that genetic susceptibility asso ciated with DR5 operates at the level of the AIDS syn drome itself rather than neoplastic transformation re sulting in Kaposi's sarcoma. Their evidence included a significant increase in DR5 in the North American White homosexual male frequency in LAS uncompli cated by Kaposi's sarcoma or opportunistic infection.…”
