Increased incidence of coronary artery disease in sleep apnoea: a long-term follow-up

Abstract: An increased incidence of cardiovascular disease has previously been reported in middle-aged males during a follow-up period of 7 yrs. The aim of the present study was to address the incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in a larger sample without any heart disease at baseline. The population comprised 308 snorers (245 males and 63 females) with a mean¡SD age of 49.0¡9.9 yrs in 1991. Data were collected via the Swedish Hospital Discharge Register, National Cause of Death Registry, clinical charts and quest… Show more

“…In a longitudinal study of the incident CAD in a sleep-clinic cohort, efficient treatment of OSA had a protective effect (38). In a non-randomized observational study, Cassar and coworkers (39) found significantly lower incidence of cardiac deaths in OSA patients treated with CPAP following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) compared with the untreated OSA patients.…”

“…There is evidence suggesting that OSA may contribute or potentially exacerbate cardiovascular disease [13,47] The words 'recently reviewed in' have been deleted as advised in reviewer comment. Studies have shown an association between OSA with hypertension, coronary disease, stroke, atrial fibrillation and heart failure [48].…”

“…In the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study and the Sleep Heart Health Study, it was found that there was a relation between OSA and hypertension [11,12]. OSA patients have an increased risk of developing coronary artery disease [13], cerebrovascular disease [14], atherosclerosis [15], arterial stiffness [16], cardiac arrhythmias [17,18] and heart failure [19]. OSA poses important perioperative risks for obese individuals who are particularly vulnerable during anaesthesia and sedation and are at an increased risk of developing postoperative respiratory and cardiopulmonary complications [20,21,22].…”
