“…Unlike infections in the normal host, fusariosis in the immunocompromised population is typically invasive and disseminated. Disseminated infections occur mainly in patients with hematological malignancies and have also occasionally been reported in the immunocompromised patients due to transplantation, solid tumors, and autoimmune disorders [13,[27][28][29][30]. In line with this, 80 % of the patients with disseminated fusariosis in the present study had hematological malignancy.…”

“…Infection occurs mainly through inhalation of airborne conidia or via breaks in the skin due to trauma and/or burns (Muhammed et al, 2011). Twelve species were associated with infection; Fusarium solani was the most frequent (∼50% of cases), followed by Fusarium oxysporum (∼20%) and Fusarium verticillioidis and Fusarium moniliforme (∼10% each) (Nucci et al, 2013).…”

“…These localized or locally invasive forms may herald disseminated disease. 6 Fusarium is a plant pathogen and opportunistic human pathogenic mould. It has been commonly described in patients with hematological malignancies and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, especially with neutropenia.…”
