Increased Plasma Vasopressin and Atrial Natriuretic Peptide in Chronic Schizophrenic Patients during Abdominal Surgery

Abstract: Chronic schizophrenic patients are reported to develop imbalanced water homeostasis by the pathological secretion of vasopressin and aldosterone. We measured plasma vasopressin, aldosterone and atrial natriuretic peptide in schizophrenic patients to elucidate the role of these hormones during a perioperative period. Eighteen schizophrenic patients with chronic antipsychotic drugs over 10 years and 22 as a control group who underwent elective lower abdominal surgery were the subjects of this study. In the schiz… Show more

“…The fact that the increase in psychotic symptoms was similar in the two groups of patients, and that stress normally has no effect on or suppresses pAVP, suggests that the pAVP responses are not attributable to the stress of psychosis per se (Goldman et al 1997). Other data also suggest that the pAVP response to mixed psychological stress is greater in schizophrenia (Elman and Breier 2002; but see Kudoh et al 1998), although the relationship to HF volume is unknown…”

“…Evidence of pathological associations between plasma or CSF levels and schizophrenia has been contradictory. Abnormal increases in plasma AVP concentration have been observed in schizophrenic populations [218,219]. High levels of plasma AVP relative to sodium concentration, a common feature to the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH), has been reported in schizophrenic patients lead some to postulate the potential involvement of AVP in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia [220][221][222].…”

“…In a study aiming to inves-tigate imbalanced water homeostasis in patients with schizophrenia, volume-regulatory hormones were measured during abdominal surgery. The concentrations of plasma aldosterone in response to surgery were significantly lower in chronically antipsychotic-treated patients compared to subjects in the control group [104].…”
