Flexibility in metal forming is needed more than ever before due to rapidly changing customer demands. It paves the way for a better control of uncertainties in development and application of metal forming processes. Although flexibility has been pursued from various viewpoints in terms of machines, material, process, working environment and properties, etc., a thorough study of the concept was undertaken in order to with problems of manufacturing competiveness and tackle new challenges of manufacturing surroundings. Therefore, in this paper, flexibility in forming is reviewed from the viewpoints of process, material, manufacturing environment, new process combinations and machine-systemsoftware interactions.

Servo presses have recently come into prominence for sheet metal forming operations due to their flexibility, controllability, and simplicity. Minimum energy consumption and maximum tool life are their significant characteristics, leading to considerable reductions in manufacturing costs. This article presents technological review on design and applications of servo presses. The characteristics of servo presses are described and compared to conventional and hydraulic presses. Mechanisms used in servo presses and their motion concepts are evaluated with design features. The industrial background of mechanisms is reported with typical examples from leading press manufacturers. A new classification of the servo presses is presented according to mechanisms and drivers. Besides, ranking of press types according to power control and mechanisms is determined. Servo presses with slider-crank mechanism design are preferred due to their distinctive characteristics.

A plastic joining method for fixing bars and hot plates, called "indentation plastic joining", was carried out using a servo press with press ram speed control. The influence of the press ram motion control on the indentation joining characteristics of an aluminum alloy bar and plate was examined. The accelerated ram motion was effective in reducing the bar indentation pressure by approximately 15% and the bonding strength of the indented barplate was improved by approximately 7%. The bonding mechanism underlying the indention joining method under press ram motion control is discussed in terms of the seizure of the plate and the mechanical clamping associated with the process. It is found that the accelerated ram motion produces heavier seizure at the indented bar-plate interface, whereas the decelerated ram motion reduces the degree of the seizure.
