This research paper addresses the issues in evaluating the effectiveness of magnetic-pulse treatment for healing continuity defects in the metal of oil and gas pipelines. A theoretical analysis of the magnetic-pulse action mechanism on continuity defects in the metal was carried out. The results of experimental studies of the effect of magnetic-pulse action on continuity defects of thick-walled samples, cut from used gas pipelines containing microcracks with different geometries, are also presented. The samples were processed under two different technological operating modes of the magnetic-pulse unit: the applied energy was 10 kJ for the first mode and 20 kJ for the second mode. The state of the cracks’ microstructure before and after the magnetic pulse treatment was studied using an optical microscope. As a result of the studies, it was found that magnetic-pulse treatment led to local heating of the crack tips, which was confirmed by the formation of a heat-affected zone in the vicinity of the crack tips. The temperature at the crack tips reached the metal’s melting point at the applied energy of 20 kJ, whereas at the energy of 10 kJ, signs of metal melting were not noted. In the course of the conducted experiments, it was found that the cracks were not completely eliminated after magnetic-pulse treatment; however, the edges of the crack tips melted, with subsequent filling by molten material. Magnetic-pulse treatment resulted in blunting of the crack tips, as their shape became smoother. It was established that the geometry and shape of the crack tip have significant influences on the effectiveness of this technology, as a narrow and sharp crack tip required less energy to reach the metal’s melting point compared to smoother one. The effect of magnetic pulse treatment on the microstructure of pipeline metal and its strength characteristics was also studied. It was found that this treatment leads to structural changes in the area of the crack tip in the form of grain refinement and subsequent strengthening of the pipeline metal.

The measurements of hydroabrasive wear of the jet pumps nozzles, used on dredges operating on transferring pulp, are carried out. The measurement result is compared with the result of modelling the flow in the pump suction chamber near the nozzles. The modelling is carried out using the Fluent program complex as a part of the Ansys program; the pure water is being modelled in the suction pipe. This assumption is made taking into account that pulp contains approximately 10 percent by volume of sand, therefore the trajectories of sand particles movement coincide with the streamlines of water. The results of modeling have shown, that the angle of attack on the surface of nozzle nose part nearest to the pulpline outlet is close to zero, whereas the angles of attack on the surface of the nozzle nose part furthest from the pipeline outlet differ considerably from the zero and range from 20 to 50 degrees, that is the values at which the hydroabrasive wear increases severalfold compared to the angles close to zero. The results of modelling are confirmed by the examination of the worn nozzles. It is turned out that the nose part of the nozzles wears out along a circle unevenly, the part furthest from the pipeline outlet wears at higher rate, that leads to the bevel of the plane of the nozzle nose opening, the bevel angle reaches 20–25 degrees. The microhardness values of the nose part of the worn nozzle are also in agreement with the results of modelling. The measurements have shown, that the microhardness of the nose part of the worn nozzle is uneven along a circle, and the microhardness of the most worn side of the nozzle nose is least. This fact indicates that the different zones of the surface of the nozzle nose part differ from each other by the rigidity of stress state scheme in hydroabrasive attack. It can be used later in choosing the regime of laboratory tests on hydroabrasive wear.

Assessment of Changes in the Abrasiveness of Solid Particles in Hydraulic Mixtures Pumped with ESPs

The statistics of using downhole electric submersible pump (ESP) units in the oil fields of Eurasia show that hydroabrasive wear is a common cause of ESP emergency failures. The authors of this study theoretically and experimentally investigated the peculiarities of water–abrasive wear of ESP components. The research methodology and construction of the laboratory bench are described, and the results of experimental studies of determination of changes in the abrasivity index of impurity particles contained in the mixture pumped with the working stages of an ESP section are given. It is shown that large particles of mechanical impurities in contact with the metal of the working stages are subjected to intensive grinding of up to 0.25…0.3 mm; after that, particle size remains practically unchanged. An increased abrasiveness index of mechanical impurities causes an increase in the intensity of wear of interstage seals along the flow of a water–abrasive mixture (from the inlet to the outlet of the pumping section). Based on the obtained results, recommendations for selection of devices for formation-fluid cleaning during development and operation of oil wells are given. The relevance of work on improving the design of interstage seals of ESP units is substantiated.
