“…Of the products available non-supervised home care, none have been test ed in an unsupervised situation. Ripa [1991] suggested that further clinical trials on self-applied APF and NaF gels were needed due to the limited clinical evidence of effec tiveness as well as the changing pattern of caries in US schoolchildren since the original studies of Englander et al [1967Englander et al [ ,1969Englander et al [ , 1971Englander et al [ ,1978, Only one clinical trial on the effect of SnF2 (1,000 ppm F) gel on controlling dental caries had been conducted [Boyd et al, 1985]. However, the study w;as not rigorously designed, and it used a small sample size and lasted only a short 6-month period; therefore, no conclusive results could be drawm.…”

“…Other fluorides have given posi tive results in some tests in fluoridated areas. For example Englander et al [1971] found that mouth-piece applications of gel drops containing l.l°/o NaF three times per week gave a 29% reduction in DMFS after 30 months.…”

“…In most studies with topical fluorides the teeth have been cleaned professionally with rub ber cup and pumice. This procedure has been based on the assumption that plaque and pellicle inhibit uptake of fluoride by en amel [Aasenden et al, 1968;Brudevold et al, 1957;Knutson et al, 1947], In several trials, however, considerable caries reduc tion has been reported without cleaning the teeth before application or rinses with topi cal fluorides [Englander et al, 1971;Ho rowitz et al, 1974;Koch, 1967;Torell and Ericsson, 1965]. The results of Bruun and Stoltze [1976], Tinanoff et al [1974Tinanoff et al [ , 1975 and Joyston-Bechal et al [1976] suggest that the uptake of fluoride by enamel from NaF, amine F or acidulated phosphate fluo ride solutions is not reduced by plaque and pellicle in vivo or in vitro.…”
