Independent Association of Waist Circumference With Hypertension and Diabetes in African American Women, South Carolina, 2007–2009

Abstract: IntroductionObesity is associated with hypertension and diabetes, which are independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD); 53% of African American women are obese. Of the approximately 44% of African American women who are hypertensive, more than 87% are overweight or obese. Additionally, more than twice as many African American women (13.1%) as white women (6.1%) have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Obesity is usually measured using body mass index (BMI). However, abdominal adiposity may be m… Show more

“…The analysis supported the hypothesis that BMI and WC both explained a significant amount of the variance over and above other factors taken into account in all models, except for total cholesterol. These findings strengthen the previously observed positive relationships of BMI and WC with systolic and diastolic blood pressures, fasting glucose levels, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides, as well as the negative relationship of BMI and WC with HDL cholesterol reported in different populations and countries (Dalton et al, 2003;Ghandehari, Le, Kamal-Bahl, Bassin, & Wong, 2009;Huxley, Mendis, Zheleznyakov, Reddy, & Chan, 2010;Lara, Bustos, Amigo, Silva, & Rona, 2012;Menke et al, 2007); and in the limited number of studies among adults of diverse ethnic/racial groups (Brown et al, 2000;Fisher-Hoch et al, 2010;Haffner, Stern, Hazuda, Pugh, & Patterson, 1987;Mueller et al, 1991;Warren, Wilcox, Dowda, & Baruth, 2012).…”

“…and therefore, mortality rate increases due to T2DM. Another reason is that the media of cooking which increases the body mass index, waist hip ratio and waist circumference, [52][53][54] lead to obesity, as a result, many other complications get triggered off. The next reason is the hypertension due to high blood pressure as in this research and others [55,56] and the related cardiovascular diseases.…”
