Indications of cone beam CT in head and neck imaging in children

Show more

“…Most patients were above 13 years of age, which is consistent with our results. It was thought that this was because clinicians requested CBCT more frequently because children are more vulnerable to ionizing radiation than adults, 7 and children in this age group show better cooperation with CBCT. Furthermore, the fact that impacted tooth, which is the most common reason for CBCT requests, is encountered more frequently in this age group explains this situation.…”

“…5 Since the tissue cells of children show a faster rate of division during growth, children are 2-10 times more vulnerable to ionizing radiation than adults. The risk of the stochastic effect of the radiation is higher, 6,7 making the use of CBCT in paediatric dentistry controversial. 2 Therefore, the dose should be adjusted according to the age and the body weight of the child.…”

“…It is obvious that radiation doses administered to patients are determined not only by exposure parameters but also by FOV in CT and CBCT. [14][15][16][17][18][19][20] It is fundamental to educate both dental practitioners and patients about the use of this progressive technology with its little consequence on general well being.…”

“…Another effective way to reduce the applied dose is to reduce the rotation angle [ 17 ]. Cone beam CT with lower radiation in comparison to CT could therefore be of great advantage in children [ 18 ].…”
