Indices for comparative assessment of the harmonic effect of different home appliances

Abstract: Most of the modern home appliances use power electronic circuits as a power supply to interface with the distribution grid. They have become a major source of harmonic distortions in power distribution systems. This article presents a study of the harmonic current characteristics of such appliance through a measurement-based comparative approach. Magnitude-related indices are introduced to compare the harmonic effects of the various appliances and to quantify their relative severity. Phase angle-related indice… Show more

“…Only the measurements taken at suspected customers and the problematic location are required. (2) The proposed method overcomes a major limitation of the correlation-based methods: the difficulty of finding the correlation when the background harmonics have large fluctuation. Both simulation verification and lab experiment have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.…”

“…Harmonic distortion adversely affects both power system components and customers' devices . Methods to estimate the major harmonic loads that cause a specific high harmonic distortion are, therefore, highly valuable for power quality management.…”

“…[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Specific investigations reveal that the currents that circulate through the neutral conductor are predominantly characterized by zero-sequence harmonic currents, also called triplen harmonics (ie, 3 rd , 9 th , 15 th , ...). “…Utility harmonic impedance is a key factor to assess harmonic emission levels in power systems, since it can be used to successfully distinguish the utility‐side and customer‐side harmonic contributions . Calculation methods of utility harmonic impedance can be divided into categories, ie, invasive and noninvasive methods .…”
