Individual migration patterns of Eurasian golden plovers Pluvialis apricaria breeding in Swedish Lapland; examples of cold spell‐induced winter movements

Abstract: Tracking studies normally focus on long-distance migrants, meaning that our understanding about short-distance migration remains limited. In this study, we present the first individual tracks of the Eurasian golden plover Pluvialis apricaria, a short-distance migrant, which were tracked from a Scandinavian breeding population using geolocators. In addition, golden plovers are known for their cold spell-induced winter movements, and this study provides some first individual tracking data on this type of movemen… Show more

“…For example, winter cold spells can induce migratory movements in Eurasian Golden Plovers, a short‐distance migratory shorebird (Machín et al. ). To examine potential weather effects, we obtained daily weather data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Global Historical Climatology Network‐Daily dataset (Menne et al.…”

“…The study area was visited also in 2012 but as nest survival was extremely low due to a combination of late snow melt (Machin et al . ) and high nest predation rates, it was impossible to study the ecology of Golden Plover chicks in that year (only one chick hatched from 21 nests located). The area is a Special Protected Area (SPA) for birds under the EU Birds Directive as well as a designated Important Bird Area (IBA) according to BirdLife International.…”

“…Departure and arrival times, which define start and termination of migratory and stationary periods, were primarily identified by visually inspecting longitude plots in combination with generated maps (Machín et al 2015;Hedh and Hedenström 2020). This approach is justified in general by the fact that (i) the spatial error is lower in the longitudinal axis compared to latitude (particularly around the equinoxes), and (ii) for the ringed plover in particular by the observations of a general southwestnortheast migratory direction in this species (based on ringing recoveries, Fransson et al 2008), and the potential for fast movements between geographical sites due to high flight speeds (Pennycuick et al 2013).…”
