INDUCTION OF IgG BY LIPID A IN THE NEWBORN MOUSE

Abstract: Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) 1 from gram-negative bacteria are powerful mitogens for B cells in vitro (1). In contrast to antigens LPS stimulates a broad spectrum of B cells regardless of their specificity for antigen (1,2). The mitogenie part of the LPS molecule has been found to be the lipid A component (3).Lipid A stimulation in vitro of cells from nonimmunized adult mice resulted in induction of IgM synthesis only (2).
