Induction of S100B Gene Expression in Long-Term Potentiation in the Hippocampal CA1 Field Depends on Activity of NMDA Receptors

Abstract: The effects of NMDA receptor blocker MK-801 on the increase in S100B protein mRNA content induced by long-term posttetanic potentiation in the hippocampal sections were studied. The level of S100B mRNA after 30-min tetanization in the presence of 10 μM MK-801 constituted 132% of the basal level, which was significantly (226%) lower than the control level. Hence, gene expression, induced by long-term posttetanic potentiation, in the glial cells (similarly as in the neurons) depended significantly on NMDA recept… Show more

“…Adenosine monophosphate deaminase (AMPD) is a very important regulator of muscle energy metabolism during exercise [5-7]. AMPD displaces the equilibrium of the myokinase reaction toward ATP production (2 ADP ↔ ATP + AMP) by converting AMP to inosine monophosphate (IMP) [5-9].…”

“…AMPD displaces the equilibrium of the myokinase reaction toward ATP production (2 ADP ↔ ATP + AMP) by converting AMP to inosine monophosphate (IMP) [5-9]. Moreover, the AMPD reaction is the initial reaction of the purine nucleotide cycle and plays a central role in the salvage of adenine nucleotides as well as the determination of energy charge [7,8]. Other important functions of the purine nucleotide cycle are the deamination of amino acids and the regulation of the glycolytic pathway by the formation of ammonia and IMP [7-9].…”

“…The mean of Ct values of five housekeeping genes (Actb, β -actin; B2m, beta-2 microglobulin; Hprt1, hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase 1; Ldha, lactate dehydrogenase A; Rplp1, ribosomal protein, large, P1) was used as the reference according to manufacturer's instructions. The concentration of S100B mRNA was measured as described previously [68]. …”
