Indurometer vs. Tonometer: Is the Indurometer Currently Able to Replace and Improve Upon the Tonometer?

Abstract: The Indurometer is easier to use as compared to the Tonometer. Modification of the Indurometer needs to take place in order to improve its variability before it can be considered as a replacement for the Tonometer in the assessment of lymphedema. The lack of understanding of the ISL classification system is a significant issue.

“…In the Myanmar cohort, a handheld tonometer, the Indurometer (Flinders and SA Biomedical Engineering, Australia), was able to detect a significant increase in mid-calf tissue compressibility among asymptomatic young people who were infected with LF, indicating that free fluid had begun to accumulate in the connective tissue spaces, even though there was no clinical sign of swelling. The Indurometer has demonstrated good intra-rater reliability in several populations including people affected by lower-limb lymphedema in this study [21,[23][24][25].…”

“…Briefly, the Indurometer has an indenter which is pressed gently into the skin and underlying tissue and records the distance the indenter has been able to indent the tissue in millimetres. A lower value indicates more tissue stiffness (less compressible), and more compressible tissue (less stiff) will return a higher value [ 9 , 35 ].…”

“…Detailed data collection methods have been published [21,28,34]. The primary outcome was change in lymphedema status as determined by a combination of; (1) lymphedema stage [33], (2) mid-calf circumference, and (3) mid-calf tissue compressibility quantified by tissue tonometry using the Indurometer [35]. Secondary outcome measures were (1) frequency and duration of acute attacks, (2) days of work lost due to lymphedema, and (3) number of interdigital lesions and entry lesions (unhealed wounds) on the affected leg(s).…”
