Industrial Wastes as Alternative Mineral Addition in Portland Cement and as Aggregate in Coating Mortars

Abstract: This paper presents an evaluation study of wastes from pulp and paper as well as construction and demolition industries for application in cement-based materials. The alternative raw materials were used as a source of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) and as pozzolanic material (water-reactive SiO 2 ) in partial replacement of Portland cement. In addition to the hydraulic binder, coating mortars were composed by combining the pulp and paper fluidized bed sand residue with construction and demolition wastes, both add… Show more

“…Due to the presence of reactive silicates and calcium carbonate in PPFA, it can be substituted as a supplementary cementitious material for more environmentally friendly cement/clinker manufacturing [89]. Moreover, it is useful as a partial replacement for cement and small aggregates in building concrete [90][91][92][93][94]. The development of alternative value-added geomaterials from PPFA for mortar/concrete manufacturing demands a comprehensive study of rheological properties and the mechanical performance of the new composite material [91].…”

“…Moreover, it is useful as a partial replacement for cement and small aggregates in building concrete [90][91][92][93][94]. The development of alternative value-added geomaterials from PPFA for mortar/concrete manufacturing demands a comprehensive study of rheological properties and the mechanical performance of the new composite material [91]. Further, PPFA can be agglomerated through a pelletization technique and postprocessed (by sintering, autoclaving, and cold-bonding) in order to attain a desired strength for use as a light-weight aggregate for various applications in the Sustainability 2019, 11, 4394 9 of 16 construction industry [18].…”

“…From the DTG thermogram it is possible to identify a constant behavior in the mass of the material, that is, without loss of mass until the temperature of 750 °C, where it is observed a loss of mass of 2.4%, due to a possible thermal decomposition of the calcite, promoted by the gas release carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). The thermal decomposition of the calcite (CaCO 3 ) occurs from 700 ºC, with phase transformation at 850 ºC, resulting in the formation of lime (CaO) and CO 2 release and the relationship between the calcite mass loss (CaCO 3 ) and the decomposition of the organic matter occurs between the temperatures of 350 ºC and 800 ºC 14,45,46 .…”

“…Thus, several researchers studied technical feasibility for the incorporation of different residues in the production of mortars, aiming at the partial replacement of the cement, which is the most important agglomerant in the production of the mortar. Among them, they evaluated the use of marble residues 13,11 , eggshell powder 8 , waste paper and cellulose, as well as construction and demolition industries for application in cement-based materials 14 , biomass residue from a pulp and paper mill 15 , heavy ash obtained from the combustion of mineral coal 16 , biomass ash 17 and sewage sludge 18 . These articles aim to contribute to the sustainable development by making greater use of industrial residues in the civil construction as mortars 12 and concrete 19 .…”
