Infection and Infertility in Mares

Abstract: In cyclic mares, the uterine environment can easily disturbed due to inflammatory processes that occur secondary to microbial invasion. Different aerobic and anaerobic bacteria can enter the uterus during natural mating, artificial insemination, reproductive examination or parturition. The postpartum period is a critical phase since due to relaxation of the uterus and cervix may favor recurrent infections air intake pneumovagina or urine collection in mares with poor perineal conformation. Infections are mainl… Show more

“…To note that variations in the vaginal microbiota may occur as the result of anatomical malformations (e.g., position and slope of external genitalia), which can lead to various disorders of the vaginal vestibule (e.g., pneumovagina, urovagina), use of irritant chemicals (e.g., antiseptics) during examination of the genital tract or artificial insemination, placement of intra-vaginal devices (for reproductive control), mating, vaginal injury or effects of antibiotics present in semen extenders. The above may lead to disturbance of the normal barrier and an imbalance of the normal vaginal microbiota [ 29 , 30 ].…”

“…In horses, it is possible that UTI results from individual faecal contamination of the urogenital tract, while reproductive pathologies (e.g. uterine infections) in mares occur by natural mating, artificial insemination, reproductive examination or parturition (Satué and Gardon, 2016 ).…”

“…as a causal agent for infections in horses, such as mares with metritis and cervicitis, foals with septicemia and pneumonia [3], and pneumonia in adult horses [2], and disease severity depends on the pathogenicity of the strains [1]. In the horse industry, about 25%-60% of economic losses are caused by endometritis, and Klebsiella pneumoniae was reported as one of the causal infections that can be transmitted through the venereal route [4,5]. First-, second-, and third-generation cephalosporin has been used for treatment of bacterial infection in equine medicine for several years.…”
