Infectious Disease Surveillance in the 21st Century: An Integrated Web-Based Surveillance and Case Management System

Abstract: The Massachusetts Virtual Epidemiologic Network (MAVEN) was deployed in 2006 by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Bureau of Infectious Disease to serve as an integrated, Web-based disease surveillance and case management system. MAVEN replaced program-specific, siloed databases, which were inaccessible to local public health and unable to integrate electronic reporting. Disease events are automatically created without human intervention when a case or laboratory report is received and triaged in r… Show more

“…Reporting of infectious diseases is conducted under state authority in the United States. In Massachusetts, electronic laboratory results are transmitted using standard codes to the Web‐based surveillance and case management system, the Massachusetts Virtual Epidemiologic Network (MAVEN), described in greater detail elsewhere . Records in MAVEN are patient based; therefore, a new laboratory result is appended to an existing patient record, or MAVEN creates a new disease “event.” When a new suspected babesiosis case is identified, an investigation is triggered and the state and local DPH are notified.…”

“…Data were extracted from the Massachusetts Virtual Epidemiologic Network (MAVEN), which is the MDPH’s web-based surveillance and case management system (14). MAVEN includes demographic and clinical data derived from health screenings overseas and shortly after arrival in Massachusetts.…”
