Infiltrating angiolipoma of the cheek

Abstract: Angiolipoma, spindle cell lipoma, myelolipoma, chondrolipoma and myxolipoma are histological variants of lipomas arising from fat tissue. Although angiolipoma is the most common tumour in the trunk and forearm, it occurs infrequently in the head and neck region. In this report we present a case of angiolipoma occurring in the buccal mucosa of a 33-year-old man. The patient had noticed a painless mass in his buccal mucosa for 2 months. The surgically removed tumour, measuring 4 × 4 cm in diameter was histologic… Show more

“…Infiltrating angiolipoma usually occurs in the trunk and limbs and is rarely seen in the head and neck region. Location of the tumor is a major factor in determining its prognosis (7). Angiolipomas usually happen sporadically, but a few cases have a family history of angiolipoma, and the inheritance pattern in these cases is autosomal recessive or in very rare cases autosomal-dominant pattern (5,10).…”

“…Histopathologic studies are required for definitive diagnosis of angiolipoma from other soft tissue tumors such as hemangioma, myxolipoma, and Kaposi's sarcoma; magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be useful in evaluation of the tumor expansion and preoperative diagnosis (5,11). Surgical excision is the best treatment for both encapsulated and un-capsulated angiolipomas (2,3,7). Because infiltrating angiolipoma often penetrates the surrounding tissues, complete resection of the tumor may damage the surrounding structures (5, 7).…”

“…Although considered benign, inadequate excision of infiltrating angiolipoma can lead to recurrence [ 14 ]. A search of the literature, between 1980 and 2019, found only 42 cases of angiolipoma of the head and neck, seven of which originated in the neck [ 1 , 2 , 9 , 12 , 18 ].…”

“…Lipomas are the most common benign mesenchymal tumors, composed of mature adipocytes. They are defined as a well-defined mass, surrounded by thin fibrous capsule, usually asymptomatic, slow-growing and soft [ 1 ]. Lipomas can be sub-classified into different histological subtypes based on the appearance of the associated stroma.…”
