Inflammatory pseudotumor of the choroid plexus

Abstract: The case of an 18-year-old man with a tumor of the left lateral ventricle is reported. The mass was observed to be contiguous with the choroid plexus but could be totally removed. Pathological examination disclosed an inflammatory pseudotumor. The authors review the literature on this lesion and related disorders involving the central nervous system and stress the need for a morphological differential diagnosis. Inflammatory pseudotumor should be considered in any case of intraventricular tumor.

“…Only 2 previous cases of intraventricular IP have been reported in pediatric patients and in both instances presented in males with radiographic evidence of biventricular hydrocephalus [4,5]. Importantly, on examination in the current case, IP involving the choroid plexus in a 16-year-old female was not associated with focal neurological deficits or signs of hydrocephalus.…”

“…Xanthogranuloma, neurosarcoidosis, and low-grade astrocytoma are unlikely to bleed 2) . In previously reported cases of intraventricular pseudotumor, there also was no tumor bleeding [1][2][3]6,8) . However, in our case, repeated bleedings was characteristic.…”

“…Only 9 cases of IP in the ventricles have been reported in detail (Table 1), 1,4,5,8,10,11,13,14) occurring in 2 females and 7 males aged 15-73 years (mean 49 years), indicating a tendency to occur in middle-aged or older men. 10) Eight of 9 cases developed in the lateral ventricle, with the remaining case developing in the fourth ventricle.…”
