Inflation and supersymmetry breaking

We study cosmic string formation within supersymmetric grand unified theories. We consider gauge groups having a rank between 4 and 8. We examine all possible spontaneous symmetry breaking patterns from the GUT down to the standard model gauge group. Assuming standard hybrid inflation, we select all the models which can solve the GUT monopole problem, lead to baryogenesis after inflation and are consistent with proton lifetime measurements. We conclude that in all acceptable spontaneous symmetry breaking schemes, cosmic string formation is unavoidable. The strings which form at the end of inflation have a mass which is proportional to the inflationary scale. Sometimes, a second network of strings form at a lower scale. Models based on gauge groups which have rank greater than 6 can lead to more than one inflationary era; they all end by cosmic string formation.

We investigate an inflation model with the inflaton being identified with a Higgs boson responsible for the breaking of U(1) B−L symmetry. We show that supersymmetry must remain a good symmetry at scales one order of magnitude below the inflation scale, in order for the inflation model to solve the horizon and flatness problems, as well as to account for the observed density perturbation. The upper bound on the soft supersymmetry breaking mass lies between 1 TeV and 10 3 TeV. Interestingly, our finding opens up a possibility that universes with the low-scale supersymmetry are realized by the inflationary selection. Our inflation model has rich implications; non-thermal leptogenesis naturally works, and the gravitino and moduli problems as well as the moduli destabilization problem can be solved or ameliorated; the standard-model higgs boson receives a sizable radiative correction if the supersymmertry breaking takes a value on the high side ∼ 10 3 TeV.

In hybrid inflation, the inflaton generically has a tadpole due to gravitational effects in supergravity, which significantly changes the inflaton dynamics in highscale supersymmetry. We point out that the tadpole can be cancelled if there is a supersymmetry breaking singlet with gravitational couplings, and in particular, the cancellation is automatic in no-scale supergravity. We consider the LARGE volume scenario as a concrete example and discuss the compatibility between the hybrid inflation and the moduli stabilization. We also point out that the dark radiation generated by the overall volume modulus decay naturally relaxes a tension between the observed spectral index and the prediction of the hybrid inflation.
