Influence of 65G steel microstructure on crack faces friction factor under mode II fatigue fracture

Abstract: Purpose: The aim of the paper is to evaluate the dependence of microstructure parameters, strength and plasticity of steel on crack faces friction factor.Design/methodology/approach: The specimens for the investigation were cut out fromthe 10 mm thick hot-rolled plate of 65G steel used as a model material for fatigue anddurability testing of whole-rolled railway wheels. The mechanical characteristics of the steelwere determined according to the state standard using cylindrical specimens of diameter5 mm and effe… Show more

“…where l -total crack length, b -basic dimension fccrack faces friction factor. To establish crack faces friction factor fc at the transverse shear fragments of fractured I-beam specimen containing crack faces were cut out and tested as a friction pair according to Amontons Coulomb's law using the original device and technique described in [18]. On the base of test results, the fatigue crack growth rate curves in logarithmic coordinates ∆K (∆KІ for normal tension and ∆KІІ for transverse shear) vs. v were built by approximation of the experimental data points with S-lines.…”

“…To fabricate MMCs with enhanced properties, the processing technique must ensure a high volume fraction of reinforcement, its uniform distribution and acceptable adhesion between the matrix and the reinforcing phase without unwanted interfacial reactions that degrade the mechanical properties. Many processing tech-niques have been developed to produce MMCs employing a variety of binder and reinforcement combinations [6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. Among these, a spontaneous infiltration process is widely used for making MMCs with a high volume fraction of reinforcements which offers many more advantages compared to those of other conventional manufacturing processes [13][14][15][16].…”

“…The dynamic progress in manufacturing technology and available research methods recorded in recent years, along with the constantly growing demand for machines and technical devices characterized by high reliability, constitute the premise for conducting research on fatigue strength of construction materials [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Industrially produced steels contain in their chemical composition, in addition to alloying additives (which include Si, Mn, Cr, Mo, V, W, B and others), blends and impurities (such as S, P, O i inne) and other impurities introduced into the alloy as a result of Technological process (e.g.…”
