The burning problems of udder health /subclinical mastitis (SCM) in dairy cattle is considered as a worldwide silent threat which is major reasons for low yield and poor quality milk and causes substantial economic loss. The present work was conducted at ICAR-NDRI, ERS, Kalyani (WB) through a project (2017-2020). The article’s aim is to review important advances in udder health maintenance to ameliorate SCM for higher quantity and quality milk production. Many researchers worked to identify effective practices to control SCM caused by Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus. Worldwide different researchers aimed to achieve better udder health and focused to detect SCM, mechanisms associated with infection, differentiating between clinical and subclinical stages, invent suitable diagnostic tests, understand exposure time, recognize specific characteristics of pathogen and establishing scientific milking procedures, etc. Establishment of standard operative programs, as discussed in this paper, resulted in better udder health maintenance. In changing climatic scenario and varying farm management practices globally researchers worked to redefine procedures to control SCM caused by different biotic and abiotic agents. Although, researchers achieved significant advances in SCM management, however changing herd structure and increased milk demand indicates that SCM /udder health will be one of the major issues to be dealt by scientists, entrepreneurs, dairy workers.

There is a continuous challenge for improving the quantity and quality of milk yield through dairy animals. However, dairy animals from their nature are susceptible towards subclinical mastitis (SM) as their physiology depends majorly upon its management and surrounding conditions. Symptoms of SM is invisible, however, slowly it may deplete the physiology of dairy animals Especially in the case of large dairy farms, the cases of SM are higher than that of small herd or dairy farm. Maintenance of proper management conditions that lowers the chances of dairy animals from getting exposed towards SM is highly recommended. However, behavior of microbes causing SM gets changed with the varying climatic scenarios. Improved management practices such as breeding management, balanced nutrition, milking practices, hygienic milking, dry cow management, proper handling, plant-derived products; etc may help in preventing and controlling SM cases.SM causes high economic losses the whole dairy farming community and industry and it hampers the health status and well-being of dairy animals. Hence, proper knowledge of factors related to SM etiology and its management becomes necessary for both animals and dairy farmers. Therefore this review has been formulated to provide a better understanding of SM and its management in dairy animals.

Subclinical mastitis (SCM) particularly affects milk yield, quality and health of lactating animals. It is an apparently invisible problem that silently leads to enormous financial damage to the whole dairy industry. It is evident from previous studies that faulty animal husbandry practices including microbial infections, poor nutrition, unhygienic microenvironment, poor transition management of dairy animals and changing climatic scenarios are major reasons for increased SCM cases. The aim of this manuscript includes summarizing the factors associated with SCM and its effects on various performances of affected animals, detection methods and management strategies (improved nutrition, maintenance of optimum energy balance, genetic selection of mastitis-resistant animals, improved milking practices, hygienic conditions, emerging dry cow therapies, use of bacteriophages, utilization of plant- and animal-derived products and compounds) to curb the SCM cases in dairy animals. However, special emphasis has been made on the management practices that may be helpful in controlling SCM cases in dairy animals. A wide range of practices has been studied towards controlling SCM cases but it may not be denied that SCM is likely to be a continued challenge for the dairy herdsman.
