Influence of an upwelling filament on the distribution of labile fraction of dissolved Zn, Cd and Pb off Cape São Vicente, SW Iberia

Abstract: Under northerly winds upwelling is recurrent at the Cape São Vicente, SW Iberia, and plays a major role on the distribution of dissolved nutrients and metals. The aim of this work was to characterize the dissolved metals distribution of zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), associated with a filament of upwelled water that stretches seaward from the Cape. Additionally, the relationships between labile metals and other oceanographic

“…Our surface water DPb concentration of 40.2 ± 7.5 pmol kg À1 (n = 109) along the shelf break in 2014-2015 showed at least a fourfold decrease compared to previous reports for the region (Figure 2e and Table S2) (Brügmann et al, 1985;Cotté-Krief et al, 2002;Helmers & Van der Loeff, 1993;Lambert et al, 1991;Muller et al, 1994) and were generally lower in comparison to other European shelf waters over the last 4 decades (Kremling & Streu, 2001;Laumond et al, 1984;Monteiro et al, 2015;Pohl et al, 2011;Prego et al, 2013;Waeles et al, 2008). The diminishing DPb concentrations over the last two decades form a success of the phaseout process of leaded gasoline.…”

“…Although industrial pollution, like lead-acid battery factory and chemical industry effluents, can increase the level of contaminant, the possibility of the strong upwelling bringing high levels of Cd and Zn cannot be excluded. Indeed, such a phenomenon has been explicated in the previous study [ 72 ].…”

“…Site 1 (Sagres) (one of the sites where the numbers of MPs per mussel where higher (Figure 4) is located on the west end of the coast. This site is located in an upwelling zone where, a cold filament is recurrently formed off Cape São Vicente, the SW of the Iberian Peninsula (Monteiro et al, 2015) and although less populated than sites 2-3, there is extensive fishing activity involving long line aquaculture with large amounts of shellfish farming nets, pots and traps, fishing nets, cables, ropes and fishery cooling resources. All this material is made of plastic, and over the years it is weathered and fragmented, giving rise to small plastic particles that become available to aquatic organisms.…”
