Influence of blood pressure on cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) examined based on percentage change during general anesthesia

Abstract: Cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) are non-invasive methods for estimating arterial distensibility. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether CAVI as an index of true arterial stiffness is superior to baPWV based on the percentage change in hemodynamics under general anesthesia. CAVI (segment from heart to ankle), k-CAVI (heart to knee) and baPWV (brachial to ankle) in 30 oral surgery patients were measured to compare the decreased blood pressure (BP) after… Show more

“…CAVI is an index of arterial stiffness reflecting the elastic properties of the arterial wall between the aortic arch and the distal arteries of the lower extremities and it is considered to be independent of blood pressure at the time of measurement [12-14,17,18]. CAVI has proven to be valid and reproducible [19,20].…”

“…Artery health can be evaluated non-invasively via surrogate markers i.e. arterial stiffness [2-5] and endothelial function [6]. The main beneficial lifestyle habits influencing the LDL cholesterol concentration are 1) low intake of cholesterol and total fats, especially those of saturated fats, 2) maintaining normal body weight, 3) ensuring regular physical activity [7].…”

“…In comparison to the PWV, the CAVI has distinctive features. For example, the CAVI changes over a short period of time in response to alterations in circulatory conditions, reflecting the state of smooth muscle contractions, rather than changes in blood pressure 37) . Moreover, the CAVI is not related to systolic or diastolic blood pressure 17,36) ; therefore, it is considered to be superior to PWV as an index of arterial stiffness.…”
