Influence of branched‐chain amino acid infusion on arterial concentrations and brain exchange of amino acids in patients with hepatic cirrhosis

Abstract: Summary. The influence of branched‐chain amino acid (BCAA) infusion on arterial concentrations and brain exchange of amino acids was studied in seven patients with hepatic cirrhosis and in six healthy control subjects. “…We have already reported that branched-chain amino acids infused to cirrhotic patients can be well transported into the brain via the blood-brain barrier4 where detoxification of ammonia takes place by supplying glutamic acid from branched-chain amino acids.5 Nine per cent of total leucine infused to cirrhotic patients was taken up by the brain. 6 These results suggest that branched-chain amino acids may directly accelerate ammonia detoxification in brain of cirrhotic patients and result in ameliorating hepatic encephalopathy.…”
