Influence of carbon dioxide, inoculum rate, amount and mixing of casing soil on Agaricus blazei fruiting bodies yield

Abstract: Influence of carbon dioxide concentration during compost and casing soil overgrowth, inoculum rate, casing soil depth and mixing on Agaricus blazei fruiting bodies yield was determined. Compost composed of chicken manure and wheat straw which is used for commercial button mushrooms cultivation in Slovenia showed to be appropriate for A. blazei fruiting bodies production. Out of the parameters tested in our experiments, casing soil depth and inoculum rate had the biggest positive effect on fruiting bodies produ… Show more

“…Both 5 and 8 cm of casing mixture based on Brazilian soils were better than 3 cm for cultivating ABL‐97/12 in a greenhouse on substrate prepared with local Brazilian wastes . Increasing casing quantity led to higher yield in strain M7700 grown in a climatic chamber on substrate made of chicken manure, wheat straw and gypsum . Besides the effect observed in a greenhouse, no improvement occurred in a bamboo‐covered structure .…”

“…The mushroom has been produced on a commercial scale in Brazil since the early 1990s and exported to several countries. Nowadays it is also cultivated at the industrial level in Japan, China, Taiwan and Korea . These cultures rely on local agroindustrial waste‐based substrates.…”

“…Heavy metals and other inorganic elements in the culture media and in the casing soils. Agaricus blazei is a secondary saprophyte and, unlike most wood-decomposing primary saprophytes, such as Lentinula edodes, Ganoderma lucidum and Pleurotus ostreatus (Pokhrel & Ohga, 2007;Gregori et al, 2008), the growth media must be first degraded by microbes or composted in order to allow nutrients to be absorbed by A. blazei. These differences may be attributed to the type of culture medium used or to the age of the compost.…”

“…deals with commercial, nutritional and production aspects. In Europe it is normally grown on a compost similar to that of A. bisporus . However, it is a tropical mushroom and demands higher temperatures for growth and fruiting.…”
