Influence of caries detection dye on bond strength of sound and carious affected dentin: An in-vitro study

Abstract: Objectives:The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of caries detection dye on the in-vitro tensile bond strength of adhesive materials to sound and carious affected dentin.Materials and Methods:Forty healthy and carious human molars were ground to expose superficial sound dentin and carious affected dentin. Caries Detector dye was applied to sound and carious affected dentin and rinsed. Subsequently the dentin was etched with 37% phosphoric acid and rinsed leaving a moist dentin surface. “…Considering that dentin is a challenging substrate for adhesion and that the universal SBU is comprised of a heterogeneous composition that mixes various different components into the same solution (e.g., acidic and non-acidic monomers, solvents, fillers, initiators, and silane - Table 1), the combination of these factors may have probably decreased the bonding ability of SBU to dentin. SB, on the other hand, has a less complex composition than SBU, thus allowing satisfactory adhesion, which is corroborated by several previous studies [16][17][18][19]. However, this study tested only the immediate bond strength to dentin, and it is known that etch-and-rinse adhesives tend to generate less stable dentin bonding as compared with self-etch adhesives [8].…”

“…[18][19][20] Even when using proper methods for detecting and removing caries, a heterogeneous substrate can remain after removal of the caries-infected dentin. 21 In some cases, the presence of small sites of CAD surrounded by sound dentin has been observed. Because the sizes and shapes of these sites are often irregular, 22 standardizing the sample preparation for bonding tests is too difficult.…”
