Influence of Casting Velocity on Mechanical Properties and Macro-Structure of Tin Bronzes

Abstract: Continuous casting is the most productive method of casting. Manufacturers often tend to increase casting velocity without taking into account the fact that it can cause latent defects within the casting and accordingly lead to a deterioration of the mechanical properties of product. The casting process of tin bronzes encumbers high shrinkage and high segregation in the cross section of the castings. The research was performed on three types of tin bronze alloys CuSn12-C, CuSn5Zn5Pb2-C, and CuSn7Zn3Pb7-C (EN 1… Show more

“…A no less important factor in implementing continuous casting is the casting rate since productivity depends directly upon it. The effect of casting rate on the properties of the bars obtained depends strongly on the cast alloy composition [10,13]. An increase in casting rate leads to an increase in heat removal in a side direction that leads to a change in grain growth direction [10,14].…”

“…In industrial applications, pressure tightness is essential for tin bronzes [49][50][51][52][53][54]. One of the drawbacks of tin bronzes is their tendency to form structural defects such as porosity.…”

“…For the vertical continuous casting process, there are casting machines which can cast products vertically up or down. Unlike vertical downward continuous casting, the continuous vertical downward casting process uses gravity to feed the metal into the mold [4]. This process which is used in this study is widely used in industry and especially for the manufacture of steel bars and other metal alloys.…”
