Influence of Familiarization on a Backward, Overhead Medicine Ball Explosive Power Test

Abstract: This study examined the influence of familiarization with the backward, overhead medicine ball throw test of explosive power. Male rugby players (N = 28) aged 15 to 16 (M +/- SD = 15.1 +/- 0.5) years completed the medicine ball throw six times. Repeated measures ANOVA indicated that the distance thrown differed across trials (F5,135 = 12.83, p < 0.01). Least significant differences post hoc multiple comparisons revealed significant differences between a number of trials; however, no significant difference was … Show more

“…Attempts were made to minimize the influences of learning on performance by requiring subject to practice both the VJ and BOST techniques during the familiarization session (12). Also, to confirm that a training effect did not appear to have skewed the results of performance on the BOST test, the median BOST technique ratings were 4.5 for both trials, with a range of 3.0-5.0.…”

“…Duncan et al (4) have suggested that the BOMB throw is a reliable method to assess total body explosive power in male adolescent rugby players. In all of the recent studies, the sample is fairly small in size, and it typically consists of elite athletes, not young children in physical education classes.…”

“…Several of the exercises are performed with very powerful throws of the medicine ball. Several authors have indicated that these exercises can be adapted into a very reliable and valid method of testing power and strength in both the lower and upper body 17,[22][23][24][25] . These exercises work well to test core strength due to the exercises requiring the core to act as an intermediary to transfer forces to the extremities.…”
