Influence of Fe‐MMT on the fire retarding behavior and mechanical property of (ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer/magnesium hydroxide) composite

Abstract: In this work, Fe‐montmorillonite (Fe‐MMT) is synthesized and used as a synergistic agent in ethylene vinyl acetate/magnesium hydroxide (EVA/MH) flame retardant formulations. The synergistic effect of Fe‐MMT with magnesium hydroxide (MH) as the halogen‐free flame retardant for ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) is studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting the oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94, and cone calorimetry test. Compared with that of Na‐MMT, it indicates that the synergistic effects of Fe‐MMT enhance the … Show more

“…In recent years, many researches have published similar results related e.g. to zinc borate [3][4][5], multiwalled carbon nanotubes [6], Fe-MMT [7], layered double hydroxide [8], rubber [9], organo-modified montmorillonite [10], silicon [11], fumed silica [1], talc [12], expandable graphite [13], zinc hydroxystannate [14] and ammonium polyphosphate [15], combined with MH. Nevertheless, very few publications appear in the literature concerning the sepiolite used in combination with MH in EVA matrix.…”

“…However, the above data indicate that the fire-resistance performances of EVA/LDH blends are enhanced by partly substituting LDH with Al 2 O 3 . The mechanism of the enhancement in UL 94 rating is mainly due to the physical process in the condensed phase, as reported in the literature [12][13][14]. The addition of Al 2 O 3 also increases the polymer melting viscosity, which favors the UL-94 test [15].…”

“…In particular, montmorillonite is a desirable layered inorganic compound that provides various polymeric materials with incombustible characteristics. [10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17] In contrast, although magadiite is also a layered inorganic compound, no remarkable improvement in the flammability properties of polystyrene (PS)/magadiite composites has been reported thus far. 18 We presume that poor dispersibility of magadiite in PS matrix must be the most significant factor for the low incombustibility of PS/magadiite composites.…”
