Influence of fertilizer treatment on apple fruit composition and physiology. II. Influence on respiration rate and contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, and titratable acidity

Abstract: The respiration rates and tissue contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, and titratable acidity were determined for apple fruit from trees receiving differential fertilizer treatments U, N, P, NP, and NPK (U, no fertilizer; N, 2 lb ammonium sulphate; P, 4 1b superphosphate; and K, 1 Ib potassium sulphate, per tree per year). The results obtained (expressed on a dry weight basis) are summarized as follows: Respiration rate: N > NP = NPK = U > P. Total nitrogen content: NPK > NP = N > U = P. Ethanol-inso… Show more

“…(v) Phosphorus and phospholipids. Total phosphorus was estimated by two methods: (i) colorimetric estimation of the phosphate after acid digestion (19) and (ii) uniformly labeling rodlets with 32P by incorporating 32Pi (specific activity, ca. 200,000 cpm/4mol) into the initial growth medium.…”

“…All extracts (inorganic phosphorus, ester phosphorus, EDTA phosphorus, nucleic acid phosphorus, and lipid phosphorus) and the residue were digested first in nitric then in sulphuric acid, diluted and analysed colorimetrically in comparison with KH2PO4 standards that were similarly digested (Letham 1969). The inorganic-phosphorus and EDTA-phosphorus values were added together in calculations to give the inorganic-phosphorus values presented in the results.…”

“…Caradus and Dunlop 1978, Evans fertilizer requirements (Wright 1976, Jung 1978 has 1980), despite the relatively high heritability (30^0%) led to a search for varieties that are productive on infer-of nutritional characteristics such as nutrient absorption tile soils due to either (a) high nutrient absorption rates rate (Vose 1963). Ecological studies indicate that at low soil concentrations (Lindgren et al 1977, Nielsen non-agricultural species typical of infertile soils generand Barber 1978) or (b) more efficient use of nutrients ally have slow growth rates, moderately low rates of (i.e. produce tnore biomass per unit nutrient; White nutrient absorption, and higher nutrient concentrations 1972, Gerloff 1976).…”
