RESUMO A goiabeira é uma frutífera cultivada mundialmente, destacando-se pela grande aceitação no mercado consumidor. Entretanto, para que a cultura explore o seu máximo potencial produtivo e mantenha a qualidade dos frutos, é necessária a adequada adubação mineral para elevar a disponibilidade de nutrientes no solo e aumentar sua absorção pelas plantas. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, avaliar os efeitos da adubação com doses de potássio, na presença e na ausência de cálcio, no estado nutricional e na produção da goiabeira 'Paluma'. O experimento foi desenvolvido de agosto de 2015 a maio de 2016, no município de Remígio, Paraíba. As variáveis analisadas foram: teores foliares de macro e de micronutrientes, número de frutos por planta, massa média de frutos, produção de frutos por planta e produtividade. As plantas da goiabeira estavam adequadamente supridas em nitrogênio, fósforo, potássio, cálcio, magnésio, boro, ferro, manganês e deficientes em enxofre, cobre e zinco. A adubação com cálcio incrementou os teores foliares de P, K, Ca, S, B, Mn e Zn e reduziu o número de frutos por planta e a produtividade da goiabeira 'Paluma'. A adubação potássica sem adição de cálcio, nas doses entre 101 e 143 g planta-1 ano-1 de K2O, aos 16 meses de idade, proporcionou a maior produtividade da goiabeira 'Paluma'.

Fruit set in northern highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) can be low under certain climatic conditions, contributing to reduced yields in northwestern Washington. The mechanisms influencing fruit set are complex, but reduced fruit set may be associated with inadequate nutrient availability during critical stages of flowering, ovule fertilization, and initial fruit development. Calcium (Ca) and boron (B) are of particular interest for reproductive developmental processes and are frequently applied annually by growers in the Pacific Northwest region because of the perception that these nutrients enhance fruit set and corresponding yields. Evaluation of commonly applied products containing these nutrients and their effects on fruit set and yield are of specific importance to justify the application of these nutrients. To address this, commercially available fertilizers containing Ca and B were applied to ‘Draper’ and ‘Bluecrop’ blueberry as foliar sprays, either alone or in combination, during the 2015 and 2016 growing seasons in northwestern Washington. Treatments included calcium chloride (750 and 1500 ppm Ca), calcium sulfate (150 ppm Ca), and tetra borate (125 and 250 ppm B) foliar sprays, repeated six times per season every 7–10 days from early pink bud through petal fall. No significant increases were observed for fruit set, estimated yield, and fruit quality (firmness and berry weight) across the treatments. Increased concentrations of B were observed in leaf tissues in 2015 and 2016, and to a lesser extent fruit tissues. Calcium remained unchanged regardless of treatment and tissue type. Under the conditions of this study, foliar applications of Ca and B did not lead to increased fruit set or yield. This research suggests that other approaches should be explored to increase fruit set and corresponding yields of highbush blueberry grown in northwest Washington.

Foliar fertilization is advantageous because it is applied at a relatively low concentration, with high efficiency in a uniform distribution, and plants respond to the application quickly ( Kumar et al, 2016 ; Vishekaii et al, 2019 ). We revealed that Ile application enhanced plant resistance to B. cinerea in many species, including lettuce, rose, and strawberry ( Figures 5A,B ), which supports the potential to utilize water-soluble fertilizer containing Ile as a new efficient and safe strategy for B. cinerea control.…”

Amino acids are the building blocks of biomacromolecules in organisms, among which isoleucine (Ile) is the precursor of JA-Ile, an active molecule of phytohormone jasmonate (JA). JA is essential for diverse plant defense responses against biotic and abiotic stresses. Botrytis cinerea is a necrotrophic nutritional fungal pathogen that causes the second most severe plant fungal disease worldwide and infects more than 200 kinds of monocot and dicot plant species. In this study, we demonstrated that Ile application enhances plant resistance against B. cinerea in Arabidopsis, which is dependent on the JA receptor COI1 and the jasmonic acid-amido synthetase JAR1. The mutant lib with higher Ile content in leaves exhibits enhanced resistance to B. cinerea infection. Furthermore, we found that the exogenous Ile application moderately enhanced plant resistance to B. cinerea in various horticultural plant species, including lettuce, rose, and strawberry, suggesting a practical and effective strategy to control B. cinerea disease in agriculture. These results together showed that the increase of Ile could positively regulate the resistance of various plants to B. cinerea by enhancing JA signaling, which would offer potential applications for crop protection.
