Influence of Gender on C-Reactive Protein, Fibrinogen, and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate in Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Abstract: Inflammation is one of the pathophysiological pathways suggested for the development of cardiovascular disease in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The recurrent nocturnal episodes of hypoxia/reoxygenation observed in patients with OSA appear to be partly responsible for the systemic inflammatory response. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of inflammation by measuring the C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen levels, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in the OSA according to gender. This s… Show more

“…As well as Yardim-Akaydin and collogues indicated this correlation more apparent in females than males. 30 It seems that marriage could play an effective role in improving their QOL. In this study 91% were married and significant relation obtained between marital status and the QOL.…”

“…In a similar vein, fibrinogen levels are one of the strongest contributors to red cell aggregability and aggregation, 441 and thence to the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, another classical indicator of inflammation. [442][443][444][445][446][447][448] It should be noted that the difference between RBC aggregation and RBC aggregability is that the latter describes an intrinsic RBC property and the former describes the effect that results from this intrinsic cell property together with other factors (e.g. plasma proteins, temperature, pH, shear rate, blood flow), resulting in RBC aggregation.…”

“…Specifically, the severity of depression does not predict the presence of OSA [29] even though it is positively correlated with IAH [30]. Furthermore, in OSA, there are arguments that the presence of chronic systemic inflammation results in higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) [31]. In addition, OSA severity is correlated with the markers of this chronic inflammation [32, 33], but have never been studied as a predictor of OSA.…”
