Influence of intrapulmonary percussive ventilation in upright position on gastro‐oesophageal reflux in infants

Abstract: IPV does not induce, nor aggravate GOR in infants without and with pathological GOR, respectively, but on the contrary decreases the number of RE in patients with pathological reflux. Pediatr Pulmonol. 2016;51:1065-1071. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

“…Some authors claim that certain ACT's could exacerbate GOR and even suggest that postural drainage with a head‐down tilt is contra‐indicated in patients with GOR . Our group found that intrapulmonary percussive ventilation (IPV) in upright position does not induce, nor aggravate GOR in infants without and with pathological GOR, respectively …”

“…8 Other research from our group also showed that IPV does not induce nor aggravate GER in infants with and without GERD, compared to a period of the same duration but in uncontrolled conditions regarding position and alertness, awake or asleep. 9 However, since it is well known that posture and awakeness have an impact on the frequency of GER episodes, the nonstandardized position, and state of alertness of the control group was a major shortcoming of this previous report. [10][11][12] Therefore, we now studied the influence of IPV on GER by comparing the number of REs during IPV to a period of the same duration in the same conditions as during IPV, in the upright position, and when awake.…”
