Influence of lake morphology on water quality

Abstract: Lakes are seriously affected due to urban pollution. The study of the morphological features of a lake system helps to identify its environmental status. The objective of the present study is to analyse the influence of morphometry on water quality in a lake (Akkulam-Veli Lake, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala). The morphological features namely mean depth, surface area, volume, shoreline length, shoreline development and index of basin permanence have been evaluated. Correlation analysis has been conducted to deter… Show more

“…This indicator describes how the coastline is similar to a circle. A bigger number means that shoreline is more varied and that the interface between the water and the surrounding land is more significant (Moses et al 2011). Both subfossil and contemporary vegetation are typical of humic lakes, while the floating mat comprises two well-developed zones-quaking and firm.…”

“…Terrestrial lakes are an important component of global and regional water cycles since they contribute the most to, and are very sensitive indicators of, worldwide nonfreezing lake water storage [1]. Conventionally, the accurate calculation of lake water storage or volume relies on the correct mapping of lake bathymetry, which is the key parameter for lake morphology study [1][2][3][4]. However, in situ mapping of lake bathymetry is costly and labor intensive [5].…”

“…This map represents an important tool for water quality modeling proposes due to it is highly relation to the reservoir hydrologic/hydrodynamic regime (Moses et al, 2011). Along with meteorological and hydrodynamic data and water quality parameters, it helps to determine the hydrodynamic behavior of the reservoir, improving the knowledge of vertical mixing processes, stratification and reaeration.…”
