Influence of Polyamines and Related Macromolecules on Silicic Acid Polycondensation: Relevance to “Soluble Silicon Pools”?

Abstract: The influence of a number of N-containing macromolecules on the polycondensation of silicic acid to form amorphous silica is studied by the combined use of 29Si NMR spectroscopy and the silicomolybdate test. Polymeric additives include poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), the poly(aminoamide) dendrimer of generation 1 (PAMAM-1), poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI), and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). These studies were performed under biologically relevant conditions (pH 5.4 and 7.0) using aqueous solutions of isotope-la… Show more

“…56 Thus, it appears that the visible inhibition of Si(OH) 4 condensation with polycations can be explained by the stabilization of oligomeric forms of PSA through their complexation with polymers that prevents further aggregation of these oligomers. 178 On the other hand, when a blue molybdenum procedure, elaborated to measure only monomer and dimer of silicic acid is employed, 136 the same team reported acceleration of the condensation with polymeric bases. These ndings imply the importance of the quantication method employed.…”

“…At lower silicic acid levels (≤30 µM), the majority of uptake is by SIT-mediated active transport, while at higher concentrations silicic acid enters the cell by diffusion (Thamatrakoln and Hildebrand, 2008;Shrestha and Hildebrand, 2015). The concentration gradient is created by binding of silicic acid to intracellular binding components in the cytoplasm, the character of which remains unknown (Thamatrakoln and Hildebrand, 2008;Spinde et al, 2011). This means that at higher silicic acid levels, diatoms can internally control uptake depending on the rate of silica polymerization in the SDV.…”

“…27,28 Band 2 (−88 ppm), present in the binder, can be attributed to the main contribution of the geopolymer phase. 29 In comparison to the literature on geopolymer materials, the position of the observed chemical shift (band 2) varies slightly.…”
