Influence of Prewhirl Regulation by Inlet Guide Vanes on Cavitation Performance of a Centrifugal Pump

Abstract: Abstract:The influence of prewhirl regulation by inlet guide vanes (IGVs) on a centrifugal pump performance is investigated experimentally and numerically. The experimental results show that IGVs can obviously change the head and increase the efficiency of the tested centrifugal pump over a wide range of flow rates. Although the cavitation performance is degraded, the variation of the cavitation critical point is less than 0.5 m. Movement of the computed three-dimensional streamlines in suction pipe and impell… Show more

“…The head increases for 210°of IGVs while it decreases for 10°, which is consistent with the previous result. 17 For all angles of IGVs, when NPSH begins to decrease, the head first keeps constant. When NPSH continuously decreases to value around the NPSH r , the head slightly increases for 210°of IGVs while it decreases for 0°and 10°.…”

“…Shaw et al 15 thought that the variable IGVs could improve the performance and stability margin of fan by controlling the inlet flow distortion. Tan et al 17 found that pre-whirl regulation of IGVs could enhance the peak value of efficiency in centrifugal pump and thought that the cavitation performance of centrifugal pump with IGVs was worse than that without IGVs but this influence was limit.…”

“…15 Backflow phenomena is always observed at the inlet when the pump operates at small mass flow rates, which may disturb the surrounding flow field and cause vibration and noise problems. 16 Import pressure at the inlet is an effective way to control the backflow.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6] Due to the complicated distribution and variation of the multiphase flow in the cavitating pump, the transient characteristics of cavitation phenomenon should be investigated. Most existing papers of mixed-flow pump cavitation performance are studied by steady simulation method.…”
