SUMMARYThis study investigated the effects of environmental temperature on the fluoride release and recharging ability of glass ionomers. Five disk specimens (15 mm in diameter and 1 mm thick) were made of each of the following materials: a conventional luting glass ionomer, two high viscosity restorative glass ionomers and a restorative resin-modified glass ionomer. The fluoride release of each material was measured at 4°C, 37°C and 55°C. An additional three groups, which were made of the same materials, were stored in distilled and deionized water for 30 days and recharged in 250 ppm fluoride solution at 4°C, 37°C and 55°C for five minutes. The fluoride rerelease was measured daily from two days prior to two days after the recharging process. At all temperatures, the luting glass ionomers showed the greatest fluoride release and recharging ability, followed by the resin-modified glass ionomer, then the high viscosity glass ionomers. For each material, the fluoride release increased with increasing temperature and all glass ionomers showed greater recharging ability at higher temperatures. An increase in environmental temperature increased both the fluoride release and recharging of the glass ionomers. This may be important in developing regimes for improving the delivery of topical fluoride products.

Biodegradable implantable matrices containing bovine serum albumin were prepared from oligoesters by melting, and subsequently tested on in vitro albumin release. The linear poly (DL-lactic acid) and the branched terpolymer of DL-lactic acid, glycolic acid, and mannitol were synthesized. Products were of similar molecular weight and possessed different thermal and swelling characteristics. Oligoesters were loaded with 4% albumin and plasticized by 30% triacetin. Other additives added into the matrices as albumin stabilizers were divalent stearates and magnesium oxide. The influences of oligomer molecules constitution, divalent ion stearates or magnesium oxide addition, and triacetin concentration on the albumin release were quantified. SDS-PAGE revealed protein hydrolysis during the dissolution tests.

The method of injection molding of the melt of poly(L-lactic (PLLA), Mw 11 730, containing 7.5% of particles of sodium fluoride smaller than 1 microm was employed to prepare cylinders of a diameter of 2 and 10 mm in length. These matrices with an insoluble active ingredient with an amorphous structure of the carrier obtained by rapid cooling of the melt were annealed at temperatures from 70 to 140 degrees C in the medium of a hot-air drying plant and liquid paraffin. It has been found that crystallization of PLLA manifested by the rapidity of release of sodium fluoride does not take place at a temperature of 70 degrees C; at a temperature of 75 degrees C the effect of annealing of polyester matrices on the decrease in the rapidity of sodium fluoride release was already perceptible. Also in annealing of matrices at temperatures of 120 and 140 degrees C an identical deceleration of sodium fluoride release as that at 75 degrees C took place; the rapidity of the development of an effective crystalline phase was higher at higher temperatures. The method of interval cooling with the first stage of slow cooling and the second stage of rapid cooling of the melt of PLLA with 15% sodium fluoride fixed the structure achieved till the moment of the change in the rapidity of cooling. This revealed the temperature range of the development of the effective crystalline phase from the viewpoint of sodium fluoride release lying between 92 and 122 degrees C.
