The concentrations and distribution of 6 PCB indicator congeners (IUPAC nos. 28, 52, 101, 138, 153, and 180) were measured in 236 organ samples of fish (Cyprinus carpio and Oreochromis mossambicus) from the North End Lake in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were extracted from the fish muscles, gills, gonads and livers using USEPA method 8082, followed by a clean-up using concentrated sulphuric acid and florisil column chromatography. Analysis was achieved by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) using the internal standard method. . These values were relatively low compared to those reported in the literature. PCB levels were predictably highest in the lipid-rich livers. Individual congeners were not distributed homogeneously within the investigated organs. PCBs 153 and 138 were present at higher concentrations than other PCB congeners for both species. PCB contaminants in fish act as indicators of pollution in aquatic ecosystems and are a potential threat to human health when consumed.

P. flesus is considered safe for human intake, regarding PCBs and HCB. a r t i c l e i n f o t r a c tPolychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) are organic contaminants that tend to accumulate in fish. Estuaries are exposed to high anthropogenic activities, therefore tending to accumulate more contaminants than the adjacent coastal waters. Platichthys flesus, a fish with high economic value, was analysed for PCBs and HCB along its different age groups, in liver, gills, gonads and muscle. Younger fishes were caught in the estuary, whereas older fishes were caught in the adjacent coastal waters and acquired at Figueira da Foz Regional Office of Docapesca-Portos e Lotas, SA. Both contaminants concentrations follow the pattern: liver > gills > muscle. Hepatosomatic index had the lowest values in younger fishes and the highest values in older fishes. Condition factor values remain stable with age. Younger fishes had higher PCBs concentrations than the older fishes. In opposition HCB was only detected in fish from 3+ to 5+ and its concentration tended to increase with age. Overall P. flesus is considered safe for human intake.

Organochlorines and carbamates are common pesticides predominantly employed in agriculture. Large amounts of pesticides make their way into rivers and marine habitats. They accumulate in aquatic organisms through different exposure routes and gradually move up the food chain. Since contaminant bioaccumulation in animals is affected by several factors, this work harnessed several different approaches to explore the persistence of lindane, a long banned organochlorine pesticide, and carbaryl, a newer generation pesticide, in common sole (Solea solea), a major commercial species in Adriatic fisheries. Lindane was not only more accumulated than carbaryl in sole liver, but it was also detected in greater amount in muscle tissue, the edible part (lindane, 7 ± 4 ng/g; carbaryl, <0.004 ng/g w/w). Additional assays documented a greater accumulation of lindane in adults compared with juveniles and in specimens caught offshore than in those collected close to the coast. The present findings demonstrate the different accumulation dynamics of the two pesticides to confirm the benefits derived from the replacement of organochlorine pesticides with carbamate compounds.
