Influence of Sex on Platelet Reactivity in Response to Aspirin

Abstract: Background There are sex differences in the efficacy and safety of aspirin for the prevention of myocardial infarction and stroke. Whether this is explained by underlying differences in platelet reactivity and aspirin response remains poorly understood. Methods and Results Healthy volunteers (n=378 208 women) and patients with coronary artery disease or coronary artery disease risk factors (n=217 112 women) took aspirin for 4 weeks. Light transmittance aggregometry usin… Show more

“…Gender differences in platelet activation responses and their inhibition by aspirin have been previously reported. 123 Testing for antibodies to PF4 was positive in 22 patients and negative in 1 patient. 124 When all these reports are taken into account, it seems that the pathophysiologic mechanism of VITT links to the endogenous production of antibodies targeting PF4.…”

“…In addition, relevant differences between male and female patients were reported in terms of pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics as well as interacting effects e.g. with estrogen affecting effective levels of the pharmacon [31,32]. Finally, differences attributed to (biological) sex may also involve aspects of gender (e.g.…”
