Influence of sex steroids on inflammation and bone metabolism

Abstract: Sex steroids are central to sexual development and reproduction, exerting pleiotropic effects on multiple tissues and organs throughout the lifespan of humans. Sex steroids are fundamental to skeletal development, bone homeostasis and immune function. The composite effect of sex-specific genetic architecture and circulating levels of sex-steroid hormones closely parallels differences in the immune response and may account for corresponding sex-related differences in risk for chronic periodontitis, with men exh… Show more

“…The composite effect of sex-specific genetic architecture and the circulating levels of sex-steroid hormones closely parallels differences in the immune response and may account for corresponding sex-related differences in risk for chronic periodontitis, with men exhibiting greater susceptibility than women (31). Furthermore, smoking is an established risk factor for poor oral health (32).…”

“…There is substantial evidence supporting the role of sex steroids levels in influencing periodontal health (Kumar, 2013;Mariotti & Mawhinney, 2013;Mascarenhas, Gapski, Al-Shammari, & Wang, 2003;Shiau, Aichelmann-Reidy, & Reynolds, 2014). The periodontal tissues are indeed influenced by sex hormones, and both "systemic" and "periodontium-specific" mechanisms are likely to be involved.…”
