Influence of the Anodization Process on Zamak 5 Corrosion Resistance

Abstract: Squeeze casting is the most industrially advantageous process for producing zamak 5 parts. However, this process generates porosity defects in parts, compromising their corrosion resistance. Therefore, this work aims to minimize defects and improve zamak 5 corrosive performance through the anodizing process. For this purpose, zamak 5 was anodized in 300 mol.m -3 oxalic acid and analyzed by ATR-FTIR, SEM, wettability and EIS techniques. The anodizing process promoted the formation of oxalate and oxide layers of… Show more

“…The quality of the resulting galvanic layers depends on both the electrolyte composition [190][191][192], the applied galvanizing regime [191], and the posttreatment applied. This procedure can be executed through anodization [192][193][194][195][196], similar to the case of aluminum discussed earlier, or by the deposition of Ce-modified hydrotalcites, as proposed by Pham et al [197,198]. In summary, among the most promising approaches for corrosion protection could be achieved by subsequent performance of: (i) galvanization; (ii) galvanic layer anodization; (iii) CeCC layer deposition; (iv) phosphate sealing; and (v) hydrotalcite finishing, combined with (vi) advanced polymer deposition.…”
