Influence of the Binder on Lithium Ion Battery Electrode Tortuosity and Performance

Abstract: The electrochemical performance of porous graphite anodes in lithium ion battery applications is limited by the lithium ion concentration gradients in the liquid electrolyte, especially at high current densities and for thick coatings during battery charging. Beside the electrolyte transport parameters, the porosity and the tortuosity of the coating are key parameters that determine the electrode's suitability for high power applications. Here, we investigate the tortuosity of graphite anodes using two water a… Show more

“…The results indicate that not only the overpotential of the composite cathode with the CB was reduced at 0.5 C, but also the discharge capacity of SP was remarkably lower than that of the composite cathode with the CB, depending on the cycles, as displayed in Figure 4C. This can be attributed to a deficiency of electrical conductivity, leading to aggravation of polarization, which indicates a finite rate of the transfer of Li‐ions 46 …”

“…This allows for the optimization of parameters such as tortuosity and porosity for high power applications. For amorphous particulate redox materials, these parameters can be tuned by modifying the binder [85], substrate [86], and deposition method [87].…”

“…On the other hand, the binder is an electronic and ionic insulator. Therefore, its content should be minimized so as not to hinder charge transfers to and from the active material [22].…”
