Influence of the Reynolds Number on the Aerodynamic Performance of a Small Rotor

Abstract: The use of small rotors has increased due their applications in drones and UAVs. In order to improve the global performance of these aerial vehicles, it is necessary to understand the aerodynamics of small rotors, since this is related to the global energy consumption of such vehicles. Most of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies found in the literature that are related to the analysis of small rotors employ fully turbulent models, despite the low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers of these applications. T… Show more

“…Let us notice that there is variety of publications on UAVs aerodynamics, which includes numerical analysis [27], as well as combined experimental and CFD investigation [28,29]. The purposes of the identified works are mostly aerodynamic shape optimization [30] or examination of the influence of flight conditions on the aerodynamic characteristics of UAVs [31,32], which is also a topic of the presented work. However, in the analyzed studies, the influence of gusts dynamically changing the flow velocity magnitude and angles has not been assessed, which is considered as a novelty of the presented study.…”
