Influence of the timing of weaning on growth and survival of juvenile winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectesamericanus)

Abstract: Metamorphosis is a critical developmental stage that presents particular challenges in fish aquaculture. The sharp increase in mortality that accompanies this transformation has often been attributed to nutritional deficiencies. Providing live feed (the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis Müller, 1786 and the brine shrimp Artemia salina (Linnaeus, 1758)) during the larval stages is costly and labour intensive, which explains why much effort has been put on early weaning. However, previous observations in winter flou… Show more

“…The lipid composition of larvae and/or juveniles has been presented in detail for Florida pompano (Cavalin and Weirich, 2009;Hauville et al, 2014Hauville et al, , 2016Rombenso et al, 2016Rombenso et al, , 2017 Jackson et al, 2020) and for winter flounder (Mercier et al, 2004;Seychelles et al, 2011Seychelles et al, , 2013Vagner et al, 2013;Bélanger et al, 2018;Martinez-Silva et al, 2018). While these studies examined different developmental stages, we have merged the results for the purpose of comparison.…”

“…The development of culture techniques suitable for this species has been ongoing for many years (Fairchild, 2010; Litvak, 1999). Larval rearing protocols have already been successfully developed (Ben Khemis, Audet, Fournier, & De La Noüe, 2003; Ben Khemis, De La Noue, & Audet, 2000; Litvak, 1999; Litvak, Zadmajid, & Butts, 2020; Martinez‐Silva, Audet, Winkler, & Tremblay, 2018) and metamorphosed fish can be weaned onto formulated diets (Bélanger et al, 2018; Butts, Ben Khemis, & Litvak, 2015; Fairchild, Rennels, Howell, & Wells, 2007; Lee & Litvak, 1996a, 1996b). However, postmetamorphic mortality rate of winter flounder reared in the hatchery is still high and pigmentation of juveniles can be poorly developed.…”
